Brian K. Payne is a professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University.
His research explores strategies for responding to elder abuse in all of its various forms as well
as efforts to build collaborative responses to family violence over the life course. In addition to
developing training courses on domestic violence, sex offending, and elder abuse, Payne has
taught courses in victimology, family violence, and aggression and violent behavior. He has
presented at numerous conferences focused on improving the response to different forms of
violence.
Payne is a former editor of the American Journal of Criminal Justice and past president of the
Southern Criminal Justice Association and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. He serves
on the editorial boards of Journal of Family Violence and Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect.
Payne is the author or co-author of more than 160 journal articles and seven books including
White-Collar Crime: The Essentials (Sage), Family Violence and Criminal Justice (Elsevier,
with Randy Gainey), and Crime and Elder Abuse: An Integrated Perspective (Charles C
Thomas).
