“Last week, the House of Representatives almost unanimously passed one of the most significant bills targeting mental health reform since 1963, but mental health advocates say this notable victory is only the tip of the iceberg. 

The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act that passed in the House 422-2 on July 6 will help to address holes in the US’ mental health system by providing more hospital beds for people dealing with a mental illness who will need short-term hospitalization. The bill, introduced by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), will also require that the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) establish an interagency committee to create evidence-based findings into systems of care. HIPPA provisions may also be reinterpreted in the bill to further permit parents access to their seriously mentally ill child’s medical information and treatment plan when their child is 18 years or older. …”

“Christopher Simcox, a founder of the now-disbanded Minuteman border patrol group, has been sentenced in Arizona to more than 19 years in prison for sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl, in a case that drew the attention of the Supreme Court after Mr. Simcox tried to question the young victim.

Mr. Simcox, 55, was found guilty last month of molesting the girl, who was a friend of his 6-year-old daughter, in 2012 and 2013 during scheduled parental visits at his apartment after he and his wife divorced.

The 5-year-old girl told her mother of the abuse, who called law enforcement. …”

“Suicide is among the leading causes of death in U.S. adolescents and while it’s not entirely preventable, doctors can minimize the risk by asking the right questions during routine checkups, the American Academy of Pediatrics says. 

Pediatricians should ask about mood disorders, use of drugs and alcohol, suicidal thoughts, bullying, sexual orientation and other risk factors for suicide as part of a routine conversation about medical history, the AAP notes in treatment guidelines released today. 

About 1,750 teens ages 15 to 19 killed themselves in 2013, Dr. Benjamin Shain writes in the journal Pediatrics. …”
