In 1995, Elizabeth Crawford founded the Domestic Violence Counseling Center (DVCC), which is a non-profit organization utilizing a psych educational model instead of a criminal justice approach to address domestic violence. DVCC, an outpatient counseling center, focuses on the behavioral health needs of domestic violence victims and domestic violence offenders who are experiencing violence-related emotional trauma. Working in concert with Crawford, the West Virginia Health Care Authority, a healthcare regulatory agency, also recognized the need for this type of domestic violence program and accordingly issued a Certificate of Need to DVCC. The Certificate of Need declares that domestic violence victims and domestic violence offenders will experience serious problems in obtaining necessary behavioral health care services without the existence of DVCC.
DVCC serves any victim or offender of domestic violence regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, etc.
Ms.Crawford received a Masters of Science in Public Health and Community Health Education/Wellness from West Virginia University. She is a member of the Public Health Honorary Gamma Mu Chapter of Delta Omega. This honor was bestowed on Ms. Crawford due to her work in the development of evidence-based and progressive approaches in the prevention and/or intervention of domestic violence.
During her career, Crawford has provided numerous national, regional, and local television, radio, and newspaper interviews on the behavioral health needs of domestic violence victims and domestic violence offenders. Ms. Crawford serves as an expert on domestic violence in the African-American community.
Crawford co-authored and presented an article titled “Mandatory Arrest Policies Harmful to African-American Communities” to members of the United States Congressional Black Caucus.
